Avatar bytes live in their own `user_avatars` table rather than a column
on `user_profiles`: that row is read on nearly every request, and widening
it with image data would drag the bytes along for the ride. A serve route
reads them, and `avatar_url` points at it with a `?v=` stamp so a new
upload busts the cache without a schema change.
